Description :Fine map of the Westphalia Duchy with a decorative cartouche and small scale of miles.
Westphalia is a region in Germany, centered on the cities of Bielefeld, Bochum, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Münster, and Osnabrück and included in the states of North Rhine - Westphalia and Lower Saxony. Westphalia is roughly the region between the rivers Rhine and Weser, located north and south of the Ruhr River. No exact definition of borders can be given, because the name "Westphalia" was applied to several different entities in history. There is, however, consent that both Münster and Osnabrück as well as Bielefeld and Dortmund are part of Westphalia. Westphalia is known for the 1648 Peace of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years' War, as the two treaties were signed in Münster and Osnabrück.
Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He joined the Sanson heirs and redrew Nicolas Sanson's maps on a larger scale. 'Atlas Nouveau' (1674), sea-atlas ' Le Neptune François' (1693).
This plate is from the newly engraved Dutch counterfeited edition of the ' Atlas Nouveau', published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam.

Condition : Printed on 2 Sheets joined together. Printed on heavy, somewhat browned paper. Some oxidation of paper due to light offsetting of ink. Some minor marginal spotting. Else a good dark impression.
