Description :Rare and curious map of a supposed "Norhtwest Passage" from the Hudson Bay into the Pacific Ocean.

Based upon the explorations of John Meares, in 1788 and 1789. Engraved by Woodman & Mutlow.

The Northwest is depicted from the Columbia River (Washington) to Northern British Columbia (Prince William Sound). The track of the Sloop Washington in 1789 is shown. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is referred to as "John de Fuca's Straits". The Columbia River, which is referred to as the "River Oregon," is shown as flowing directly into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Vancouver Island is depicted as part of the British Columbia Coast, not as a separate island. Illustrated Mount Saint Elias.

Important "erroneous" mapping of the North-West Passage! ¤
Condition : Excellent dark and clear impression printed on hand-laid paper. Browning to bottom left side of the map. Some overall toning and soiling. Left and right margins cut tight, slightly affecting borderline. Short repaired tear to right border. Margins with browning and creasing. Horizontal and vertical folds with some wear and creasing.
