Description : old atlasSecond edition of this charming travel compendium illustrated with a fine world map in two hemispheres prepared by de l'Isle. California as an island. The hemispheres are surrounded by small portraits of nine explorers: Père Tachard SJ, de la Salle, Dampier, Magellan, Drake, Columbus, Vespucci, Marco Polo and Schouten.(225x335mm) Dated 1717. Ref.: Shirley, World, 601.
Fine map of the Western hemisphere showing California with indented northern coast: Agubela de Cato to north. Includes partial outline on Nouvelle Zeelande. Engraved by C.Inselin. A first state with imprint lower left. (Ref.: McLaughlin, California 135) Repair of small tear left hand part of map.

Each text page printed from a copper plate. The title page illustrated with miniature world map in double hemisphere showing California as an island.
At the end 2pp. a list of titles of available atlases and separate maps by the author.
Condition : 4°. Contemp. brown calf, spine ribbed and richly gilted. Title page, 197pp. "Introduction a la Geographie", 7 pages position of important cities (6 folding maps). Paper throughout pleasantly slightly age-toned. Spine separating, and with dark stain in upper part.
