Title : Lot of four maps showing Siberia and parts of Northern Russia..
Map maker : BELLIN, J.N..
Date : Paris, ca.1746.
Size : 7.9 x 11.8 inches. / 20.0 x 30.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncolored

Description : old map1) Carte de la Siberie . ., 1754. Detailed overview of Siberia, showing cities, towns, mountainous and forested areas, and the region's numerous rivers. Route tracks of the Gmelin and de l'Isle's scientific and survey expeditions are also indicated. Nicely engraved with a decorative cartouche appropriate to the icy landscape. 280 x 455 mm. Uncolored. Very Good condition.

old map2) Suite de la Carte de la Sibérie et la Pays de Kamtschatka, 1752. Map of Eastern Russia showing Siberia and the Kamchatka peninsula. The outline of Kamchatka had been recently established by the First Kamchatka expedition of 1725-1729., The map includes a partial voyage track for the 1648 voyage of Semen Dezhnev, who led the first voyage around Eurasia through what later became known as the Bering Strait. There is also a track for the route between Okhotsk and Kamchatka, sailed by Bering in 1740. 240 x 260 mm. Uncoloured. Very Good condition, with two folds as issued, and a light crease next to the centerfold.

old map 3) Carte du Détroit de Waeigats ou de Nassau, 1758. Interesting view of the Yugor Strait, the first discovered sea route between the Barents and Kara Seas. We see Vaygach Island (labeled as part of Novaya Zemlya) and portions of the Russian mainland. The map shows the tracks of the 1594 voyage of Linschoten, part of the Barents expedition searching for a Northeast Passage. Although there is some dispute as to the origin of the name, it is generally believed that the Dutch named the passage the Wind Strait ("Waigats"). 200 x 305 mm. Uncoloured. Better than Very Good condition.

old map4) Carte des Païs Habités par Les Samojedes et Ostiacs, 1746. Map of the Northwest coast of Russia from the Kola peninsula to the Yenisey River, showing the homeland of north Siberian indigenous tribes, the Samoyedes and the Ostiaks. The coast East of this area is marked as unknown. 161 x 240 mm. Uncoloured. Better than Very Good condition, with some very light offsetting.

Condition : Very Good or better.
