Title : A New Chart of the Southern Coast of Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to Dalagoa Bay....
Map maker : LAURIE & WHITTLE.
Date : London, 1794.
Size : 22.6 x 27.6 inches. / 57.4 x 70.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncolored

Description :A New Chart of the Southern Coast of Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to Dalagoa Bay; Including The Bank of Cape Agulhas, its soundings, currents, within and without.. &c. Drawn chiefly from the Papers of Mr Gerard De Ruyter, Captain of the Port at the Cape of Good Hope; with the track of the Worcester, Capt. Hall in 1786

With three insets: A Plan of Salhanha Bay geometrically surveyed in 1752; and
A Plan of Dalagoa Bay called by the Portuguese Bahia de Lorenzo Marques, and by the French Baye du St. Espirit. and An Elevation View (Engraving) of Table Bay and Table Mountain.

Robert Laurie and James Whittle's highly attractive large sea chart of the Southern Coast of Africa, from the edition of their highly-regarded sea atlas The African Pilot: Being a Collection of New and Accurate Charts, On a Large Scale of the Coasts, Islands, and Harbours of Africa.
Pinkerton wrote in his Geography (1804: Some valuable charts have been published by Laurie and Whittle, successors to Mr. Sayer.... In like manner the African Pilot presents charts necessary for a voyage to the Cape .....
Each chart may also commonly be had apart, and is often accompanied with sailing directions, as well as the Neptunes and Pilots, in a detached octavo form. The Dutch are careless navigators, and the best charts are the English and French.

Laurie & Whittle were leading map publishers in London at the end of the 18th century, having acquired Robert Sayer's business in 1794. A major feature of the chart is the detailed listings of depths and sandbanks on the Aghulhas Bank.

A strong impression, with some 19th century pencil annotations and lines tracking the voyages of two ships in 1805 and 1809. Rather than erase these, they are left on the chart as it shows that these charts were actively used for mapping voyages around the Aghulhas Bank.
There are also two ship position markings on the Aghulhas Bank in faint red pen. Along the view of Table Bay is a notation describing a shipwreck and the naming of Bird Island.
