Description

A lovely large fully coloured, folding map of New Zealand, from 'Philips' Comparative Wall Atlas of the British Empire'. Beneath the bold lettered title of the map there are shown the scales of statute mile - kilometers - geographical miles. The map is drawn to a scale of 1: 1,500.00 or 24 miles = 1 inch.

The coloring reflects the provincial districts of the country. The bold red lines spreading out from certain points on the map reflect the various shipping routes from NZ to other parts of the world, both near and far (routes to Sydney, Panama, Rio de Janeiro, Hobart, Cape Town, Vancouver, Melbourne, Suva and San Francisco but to name a few). Locally, there are the routes from Dunedin to Greymouth, Wellington to Christchurch, Auckland to New Plymouth, and Christchurch to Dunedin,

Within the map are red railway routes that crisscross both islands. You may note that there is a lack of any railway routes serving much of the western coast of the south island. As you might expect the more populous north island is better served in this respect. In the lower right corner there is a large inset map showing 'New Zealand and the Outlying Islands'.

It depicts the eastern half of Australia, NZ, and much of the western Pacific Ocean, highlighting places such as Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Nauru, the Solomon Islands and Christmas Island.

Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
