Description
The map is very detailed on a scale of about 1: 500,000 and was engraved by Johann Conrad Meyer.
Only 3 exemples of this first state are known, all in public Museums. So, our copy is the only one which can be obtained! Moreover, no other exemples exist with so rich, original colors!
A second edition, much more common, was printed in 1683
Hans Conrad Gyger (1599–1674) was a painter, mathematician, surveyor and cartographer active in Zurich. Gyger was the first to survey a larger area in Switzerland systematically. Gyger reached a fundamental progress by displaying mountains – until then drawn in template-like side views – as mass elevations. Thus continuous mountain ranges and valleys seen from oblique forward became apparent, not unlike today’s bird’s-eye-view maps. Gyger also finished other more traditional maps of Switzerland.
Gygers map of 1657 was afterward used by other European publishers as Nicolas Visscher (1658) and the French publisher/cartographers Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1667) and Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1693).

We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
