Description
One of the earliest and rarest geologic maps of Western Wyoming from Ft. Bridger to Yellowstone National Park which includes the Wind River Mountains and Teton Range. Worldcat locates just five institutional copies and public records of sale are scarce.
The map was created to accompany the report by T.B. Comstock, a geologist who took part in an early military reconnaissance of the region primarily tasked with finding a suitable wagon route between the Union Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone which had been established as the nation's first National Park, just one year prior.
The map includes a color coded chart classifying fifteen geologic formations and time periods which label geologic formations in some areas and the geologic era of others. The topography and trails of northwestern Wyoming are delineated including roads, stage stations, military post, astronomical observations stations and boundaries of the Snake River Indian Reservation.
The map covers the area of Jackson Hole, the Teton Mountains and extends south to include the Sweetwater Mountains. The recently created Yellowstone Park is depicted in remarkable detail. A legend provides information regarding the marking of trails of the expedition, military posts, camps, elevations and astronomical stations.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
