Description
A handsome late seventeenth century map of 'Earthly Paradise', comprising the Holy land and the Middle East. The map extends from modern-day southern Turkey and Cyprus, eastwards across Armenia and southwards to Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and to western Iran and the Persian Gulf. The map also takes in Israel, Palestine and Egypt as far west as Alexandria.
Many ancient cities are named and marked with beautiful red coloured cartouches (Alexandria, Cairo, Antioch, Babylon, Nineveh and more). Mountains, rivers, lake, forests, and ancient routes are shown, together with many smaller towns and villages.
Regions are delineated by colour. In each of the four corners of the map are circular cartouches highlighting different scenes from the book of Genesis. Upper left depicts Man naming all the livestock, animals and all the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the field. The upper right corner depicts God causing Man to sleep, and whilst asleep God plucks a rib from Man and makes Woman. The lower right corner depicts Adam & Eve's expulsion by God from the Garden of Eden.
The lower left cartouches shows Eve tempting Man with an apple in the Garden of Eden.
There is a banner title in German running the length of the upper border. A fascinating and attractive biblical map. FAQ - Guarantee - Shipping
