Description
Top left is a superb large cartouche by De Hooghe with 16 symbolic figures, mythical gods, and in the middle the crowned coat-of-arms of William of Orange, King of England (=the Dutch stadhouder Willem III) with his motto 'Je Maintiendrai' and a dedication to him by 'Romanus de Hooghe'.
On either side are views of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight (left), and Rochester and Chatham. The inset bottom right also by De Hooghe shows in a beautiful ornamental frame the Strait of Dover / Pas de Calais and the continental coast from Ostende to Calais. Several compass roses, many rhumb lines, sailing ships, and a sea battle are depicted south of the Isle of Wight.

Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
