A really splendid 1745 two-sheet engraved sea chart based on De Wit. Atlas der Zeevaart; Amsterdam. A most decorative and fascinating nautical chart of the continent, this beautiful Dutch map shows an area from Morocco to the Scandinavian island of Spitsbergen and Iceland, based upon an earlier work of the same title by De Wit, which in turn was based upon Blaeu's 4-sheet chart of Europe and the Atlantic first published in 1621.
Title and impressum: ''T Amsterdam by R. & I. Ottens' in a cartouche bottom centre surrounded by putti holding navigational instruments. Another cartouche top right shows three mile scales, a third bottom left shows two.
The map is oriented north to the right and shows numerous rhumb lines, a wind rose and an English crowned coat-of-arms. The inset map on the left shows the continuation of the Mediterranean to include Greece, Turkey, Syria, Egypt, North Africa.
