Hessel Gerritsz. the author and probable engraver of the map had seen maps of California as an island, but he relies on the more trustworthy accounts, such as Herrera, in depicting the peninsular form. The map has the best west coast delineation to date. He also does not get drawn into the debate about the North West Passage, preferring to cut his map short of these latitudes.

From Johannes De Laet's "Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien" which was the second earliest compilation of maps to focus on America, after Cornelis Wyfliet's work of 1597.

Johannes De Laet was important in the founding of New Netherlands, and was a director of the Dutch West India Company, which sponsored its settlement.
He owned a large tract of land in upstate New York, near Albany, and therefore had access to surveys and information from Dutch colonists, thus enhancing his ability to produce fine maps such as this example at such an early date.

Hessel Gerritsz. Gerritsz (1581-1632) who was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher, is "unquestionably the chief Dutch cartographer of the 17th century." (Johannes Keuning "Hessel Gerritsz" (1949) Imago Mundi Vol. 6, pp. 46-66).
