Map of the Southern USA. A re-issue of Guilaume de l' Isle's influential 1703 map of Mexico and southern North America, which is the first printed map to show an accurate definition of the lower Mississippi river and it delta.
It covers an area from the Great Lakes to New Mexico and southwards to Panama and Venezuela, and includes the Caribbean. The locations of various Indian tribes and villages, French and English forts are shown, the English possessions are continued to the east of the Allghenies.
Among other sources de l' Isle has drawn on the map of d' Iberville, Le Sueur, Lederer and Daniel's map of 1679.
Re-engraved, closely following the original de l' Isle map of 1703. Embellished with two cartouches.

Guillaume de l' Isle (1675-1724), was a Royal Geographer, and the most influential cartographer of the first quarter of the 18th century. He produced the Atlas de Géographie (1700-12), and the (posthumous) Atlas Nouveau (1730).
After the death of the widow of Pieter Mortier in 1719, the firm continued until 1778 as Covens & Mortier. They published numerous atlases and pocket atlases, using maps after de l' Isle and Jaillot.
