Copper engraved portrait of the geographer Anton Friedrich Büsching (1724–1793), engraved by Johann David Schleuen ( (active 1740-1774).
Büsching was a celebrated German theologian and geographer, who helped develop a scientific basis for the study of geography by stressing statistics rather than descriptive writing.

He was born on 27th September 1724 in Stadthagen, Schaumburg-Lippe [now in Germany] and died on 28th May 1793 in Berlin, Prussia.
Büsching was director (1766–93) of the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin, where he made significant contributions to German education.

Most important among his more than 100 publications was the multivolume Neue Erdbeschreibung, which began appearing in 1760. The first 10 parts feature the geography of Europe, the 11. Asia, when he died, only these sections had been published, Matthias Christian Sprengel and several further geographers continued. It was the first geographical work of any scientific merit.
