Bonthain Bay at the island of Sulawesi [i.e. Celebes]. The bay is about 30 leagues to the southeast of Macassar. Large amount of detail in the bay including the location of numerous soundings, rocks, bottom type, and shoals. Names Point Paitang, and Point Wideapock. On shore the fortified town of Bonthain, the Market Place, fields and more are shown.
The original map was drawn by Phillip Carteret who captained The Swallow which had reached the Strait of Macassar [i.e. Makassar] on Nov. 14, 1767 sailing to Macassar [i.e. Makassar] on Sulawesi which they reached on Dec. 15, 1767. Desperate because his men were dying of scurvy, Carteret threatened the hostile Dutch Governor to run the ship aground if assistance was denied. They were given permission to sail down the coast to moor at Bonthain Bay, where they spent some five months recuperating and trying to make the Swallow seaworthy. The Swallow sailed from Bonthain Bay on May 22, 1768, having received the news that their sister ship, Dolphin, had been in Batavia.
