Map maker : GYGER, Hans Conrad..
Date : Zürich, 1657.
Size : 21.7 x 29.5 inches. / 55.0 x 75.0 cm.
Colouring : In original colours.
Description :The Gyger map of Switzerland, in its first edition of 1657, represented a revolution for the region's representation: new methods were developed by Gyger to obtain a realistic description of the mountain areas.
The map is very detailed on a scale of about 1: 500,000 and was engraved by Johann Conrad Meyer.
A second edition, much more common, was printed in 1683
Hans Conrad Gyger (1599–1674) was a painter, mathematician, surveyor and cartographer active in Zurich. Gyger was the first to survey a larger area in Switzerland systematically. Gyger reached a fundamental progress by displaying mountains – until then drawn in template-like side views – as mass elevations. Thus continuous mountain ranges and valleys seen from oblique forward became apparent, not unlike today’s bird’s-eye-view maps. Gyger also finished other more traditional maps of Switzerland.
Gygers map of 1657 was afterward used by other European publishers as Nicolas Visscher (1658) and the French publisher/cartographers Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1667) and Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1693).
Printed from two plates and joined and attached on linen for display on the wall or protective reason.
This map represents one of the most sought-after maps of Switzerland. There are just three examples recorded, all in Institutional collections. This is the only known example in original coloring, making it even more precious.

Condition : As with practically all of the known specimens of this famous map, there are different imperfections, especially in the outer part containing figures and coats of arm. This is probably since this map was used as a geographical tool and not conceived for decoration purposes.
So, objects which were indeed in daily use (like, e.g., globes) were subject to larger damages than the ones just occasionally used (in atlases, etc.).
Nevertheless, the proper geographical part of this map is relatively well preserved. Attached on linen.
