Et….The atlas is considered to be the most beautiful nautical atlas published in Amsterdam in the seventeenth century. It contains nine large-size charts which are of French origin (Jaillot). They were designed and engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe, then in the service of William III, the king-stadholder. These charts are among the highlights of Dutch seventeenth-century cartography.
The frontispiece includes a poem comparing the dangerous adventures of Aeneas with the mighty battles of King William III against his enemies. It is filled with allegorical symbols among which the great figure of Atlas holding up the heavens. The frontispiece is on huge paper, imperial or elephants folio, measuring 64 x 48 cm. The etching is one of the very few that was characterized as 'outstanding' by Rodney Shirley in his classic reference work 'Courtiers and Cannibals'. He evaluates this frontispiece as one of "the finest examples of grand showpieces created and signed by accomplished engravers".
