Size : 13.8 x 19.4 inches. / 35.0 x 49.2 cm.

Description :Covering all of South East Asia, China, Japan, Philippines, and the west coast of North America. Like most cartographers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Ortelius drew primarily on the reports of Marco Polo for his maps of Asia.
Many of his misconceptions arose from his own and Mercator's misinterpretation of the information - for example the mythical island of Java Minor. It was also this source which led to the name of Beach being attached to what is presumably the northern tip of Australia, which many people believe proves the early discovery of the continent.
Both Beach and Locach are names resulting from copyists' corruptions of Polo's Locac (Locac-Locach-Boeach-Beach) actually Indo-China' (Perry, The Discovery of Australia, p. 22).

Ortelius depicted Japan five times on his maps, each time differently, here reproducing a kite-shape outline with a tail. The peninsula of Korea does not appear at all on this map. The map is decorated with monsters, mermaids and ships.Mapping of Australia [+]
