Title : Court card with The nine of Amerique. (Letterweight).
Map maker : DE POILLY,N..
Date : Paris, 1763.
Size : 3.3 x 2.4 inches. / 8.5 x 6.2 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured copper engraving.

Description :A playing card with a map including detail with "Nouvelle York" and Nassau in the top: St.Augustine in Florida, and Coca, St.Asee, Panuco, Guadalajara, La Guatemala, Acapulco, Crux Lavara.
The earliest undisputed reference to playing cards dates from Mach 23, 1377, when they were prohibited in the official record of the Council of Florence. Playing cards get their beauty from a meticulous drawing, an ingenious printing technique, or a bold, almost primitive depiction of the figures going back to ancient trachions.
Playing cards can also have a didactic value, so called educational or instructive cards, which gave coucise lessons in history, the art of fortification, heraldry or grammar. The follies of an age and political and religious contracts are reflected in satirical cards. Playing cards have many facets and they are often an very aesthetic 'thing of beauty'.
This playing card is from a famous private collection and preserved in between two blocks of plexiglass and presented in a stylish box.
A playing card presented as a letter weight.
