Tiflis Governorate was one of the guberniyas of the Russian Empire with its centre in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi, capital of Georgia). Tiflis Governorate was established in 1848 along with the Kutaisi Governorate, after the dissolution of the Georgia-Imeretia Governorate. In 1860 and 1868 parts of the Tiflis were used to form Elisabethpol Governorate and Dagestan Oblast. The governorate lasted in these boundaries for 50 years, until the Democratic Republic of Georgia was founded.

Prince Grigory Grigorievich Gagarin was born Saint-Petersbourg, Russia (11 mai 1810) and died in Châtellerault, France (30 janvier 1893). He was a Russian painter, Major General and administrator.
Gagarin travelled to the Caucasus (1839-1840) following his friend Mikhail Lermontov. Gagarin's Caucasian period was probably the most prolific period of his artistic career. He drew numerous drawings and watercolours depicting battle scenes, Caucasian warriors and Russian soldiers as well as genre scenes of the life of people of the Caucasus.
