An uncommon copper engraving, which is derived from Ortelius' Parergon, a reconstruction of Roman maps, started in 1579. The North is located to the right so that the entire course of the Nile is presented in the best manner.
The Nile begins at the far left of the image and ends in the many branches of the delta in the Mediterranean Sea. The area around Alexandria is displayed in the upper-right corner in a little map.
The map appoints many cities, which Ortelius knows from old documents. Places he is unsure about in relation to their location, are mentioned in the middle top centre to show that he is aware of their existence, but does not know their exact locations.

The names of the cities were derived from ancient Greek, Latin (Strabo) and Egyptian sources. Ancient Egypt is the gift of the Nile, as Ortelius puts it. Published in the Latin "Thesaurus" of 1603 by Jan Baptist Vrients.
