Condition:  A set of 6 maps, each cut on neat line and contemporarily laid down on linen. Dissected in 24 parts with original slip cases.
Slipcase richly gilted and gilted paper label.

 Condition Rating

A fine set of the world in double hemisphere, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. The maps are prepared by Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823) and published by Esnauts et Rapilly, rue St.Jacques à la Ville des Coutances. A.P.D.R. Each map is approximately 535 x 783mm.
Each cut on neat line and contemporarily laid down on linen. Dissected in 24 parts with original slip cases.
Slipcase richly gilted and gilted paper label.

Shows the North-West Coast from the discoveries of Cook and Clerke, locating the tracks of Cook and the English explorers in the Pacific. Indicated New Albion and the Port of Drake, New Zealand, Australia and New Guinea." Two section of cartouche include information on sections designed by M. Brion and by M. Clermont. Five elaborately drawn figures representing continents symbolically. Cartouche with fruits and flowers, vines.

Important map of North America, printed in the year of the Treaty of Paris which formally ended the American War of Independence.
The map was first published in 1779 and was revised in 1783 to include the name "Etats-Unis".

The second edition includes significant new detail, both in the Colonies and along the NW Coast of America, where Cook's voyage and tracks are noted, along with the route of the Spanish Manilla Galleons along the West Coast. Main is named, although not yet a colony.
East and West Florida are shown. The Carolinas and Virginia still extend to the Mississippi. Highly detailed depictions of the various Indian lands on both sides of the Mississippi. The remnants of the mythical River of the West are shown, with its terminus in Lake Ouinipignon (Winnepeg).
Highly detailed allegorical cartouche shows America nurturing two Putti, with allegorical scenes referencing commerce and the fur trade.

- L’Amerique Méridionale. Dated 1783. 783x535mm. Depicting South America from Panama to Cape Horn, with tracks of Bougainville, Cook (1768-1774) and Furneaux (1771). In the lower right corner a cartouche depicting an Indian woman with children, tree with fruits, beasts, hammock and ships.

L’Asie divisée en ses principaux Etats ou Pays... (Dated 1784). 535 x 783mm. With 2 light waterstains.
With tracks of Captain Cook and Clarke in 1778, 1779, Routes of the Spanish Galjons.
The map is of interest for the use of Mer de Corée, the sea between Korea and Japan.
