Description :Fourth edition of the "Geography of Ptolemy" by Sebastian Münster.
First edition to include the royal privilege (Henry II). The book contains 54 woodcut maps, 3 of which relate to America: No. 1 Typus Universalis, No. 46 Septentrionales Regiones and No. 54 Novae Insulae (includes a commentary on the voyages of Christphe Colombus.
The Geographia was landmark work which contained, along with the Ptolemaic maps, several of the most significant modern maps in the history of cartography.

54 double page woodcut maps, woodcut illustrations. Fourth and best edition of the Geography of Ptolomaeus edited by Sebastian Münster, illustrated with 54 xylographic maps, including two world-maps and the famous map of America (Burden 12, state 5). This is the best and definitive edition by Munster, the first to contain the Royal privilege and a new treatise entitle De utilitate tabularum geographicarum by Conrad Lycosathenes, a new map of the world (Shirley 92) and printed numeric guides around the maps.
The maps to show America are: no. 1 Typus Universalis, no. 46 Septentrionales Regiones, and no. 54 Novae Insulae (this one including comentaries on the Voyages of Colombus)

Condition : Large quarto, 7 ff., 1 f. bl., 81 ff., 1 f. bl., 17 ff., 1 f. bl., 195 pp. and 54 maps, In 17th century vellum. Bound in a 17th century vellum binding. The pages CC and DD mistakenly bound after page 48. The paper of the maps 45 to 54 are a little shorter. The title page is a little age toned, the first 2pp. slightly frayed, and some light marginal water staining at the beginning and end of the work reaching certain maps. Size of book block 320 x 210mm.
