Title : Theatrum orbis terrarum..
Map maker : ORTELIUS, A..
Date : Antwerp, 1612.
Size : 17.7 x 12.0 inches. / 45.0 x 30.5 cm.
Colouring : In attractive strong original colours.

Description :The 1612 Latin edition of the Theatrum is the most complete edition of this atlas. It contains elaborate preliminary matter and an introduction to cosmography by Michel Coignet, along with the Parergon and the Nomenclator. There is a list of the twelve plates that were added to the Theatrum by Vrients. Another list mentions five plates which had been revised by Plantin.
The present atlas has broad margins, is very well-preserved with a nice strong print. Maps in very good condition and dark impressions and attractive original colours in nice German blind stamped binding.
“The publication of this atlas marked an epoch in the history of cartography. It was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps of the countries of the world based only on contemporary knowledge since the days of Ptolemy, and in that sense may be called the first modern atlas.” – R.V. Tooley.

Since 1595 the important map of Japan was included in the "Theatrum" and it was for the first time the region was "decently" mapped, both position and shape. Since the middle-ages Japan was depicted as Chipangu or Zipangu. The Portuguese reached Japan in 1542. Till in 1641 all foreigners, except the Dutch, had to leave the country missionaries offered the most cartographic information about the country. The data from the Jesuits was accordingly revised by the official Portuguese cartographs, like Fernao Vaz Dourado.
He gave Japan the shape of the back of a tortoise, like it was depicted already in the second half of the sixteenth century. Thanks to the close contacts between Ortelius with Luis Teixeira, the most modern map in 1595 was added to the Theatrum, the orientation of the island Honsyu is not optimal yet, but the shape, now probably derived form autochthonous examples, has made a considerable improvement. Korea is already mentioned, be it as an island.
v.d.Krogt, Atlantes Neerlandici, vol 3. 31.055.
