Title : Karte von der Inselwelt Polynesien oder dem Fünften Welttheile....
Map maker : VON REILLY, F. J. J..
Date : Vienna, ca 1795.
Size : 18.1 x 25.2 inches. / 46.0 x 64.0 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :A fantastic map of the Pacific Ocean, from Kanton (China), the Philippines until Hawaii, and from Australia and New Zealand to the Marquesas Islands. Filled with routes of famous explorers, such as Mendanna, Byron, Roggewin, Quiros, Wallis, Tasman, Cook, Surville, Schouten, Le Maire, Magellan, Carteret and Bougainville.

The map provides a wealth of information, numerous places, bays, and even tiny islands are named. Numerous islands with curious german names like "Island of the bearded"; "Dangerous Island"; or "Isle of the savages"...

Based on the 1780 Swedish map by Daniel Djurberg, which in turn was based on the work of Lt. Henry Roberts, who served with Captain Cook on his last two voyages. Australia is labeled Ulimaroa, the name the Maoris of New Zealand used when describing 'a place to the north' to Capt. Cook. Djurberg concluded that the name referred to Australia.

The West of Australia is "New Holland". The eastern coastline of Australia illustrates the exploration of Cook in 1770. But the continental shape is still far from complete with a conjectural southern shoreline (labeled "never sailed coast") and Tasmania still attached to the mainland. An inset shows Cook's track south of Easter Island in 1774 along with I. St. Daniel.
Condition : A good impression on heavy hand-laid paper. Wide original margins. With some spotting and soiling. Two tiny paper damages which are backed by tape on verso.
