Description :The most famous and iconic map of England in the Stuart period. Rare first state of the map. Handsome copper engraved map from Speed's "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine". Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, published in 1610 by John Subdury and George Humble.

John Speed's famous map of England and Wales was based on Saxton's map of a few years earlier but with the addition of decorative features including ships, sea monsters, the royal coat of arms and, most notably, panels of four costumed figures at each side showing a "Lady", "Gentleman", "Citizen" and "Countryman" with their respective spouses.
At top right is also included a detailed "Catalogue of all the Shires..." listing the respective numbers of each county's cities, bishopricks, market towns, bridges, rivers and so on.

John Speed (1552-1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is know as England’s most famous Stuart period mapmaker. It was with the encouragement of William Camden that Speed began his “Historie of Great Britaine” which he published in 1611.

Condition : In fair condition. Unfortunately, it had many wormholes and worm tracks, especially along the centerfold and margins. These have been repaired and the map has been totally re-margined and flattened.
