Title : Tartariae sive Magni Chami Regni typus.
Map maker : ORTELIUS, A..
Date : Antwerp, c1590.
Size : 13.8 x 18.5 inches. / 35.0 x 47.0 cm.
Colouring : Original coloring

Description :Famous and important map of Tartary, Japan, and the west coast of North America, from Ortelius "Theatrum Orbis Terarrum", the first modern atlas of the World.

The map is the earliest obtainable map to name California, and includes the 7 cities of Cibola in the Southwestern US, but only 6 cities are actually shown. The Straits of Anian are also named. Includes a curious treatment of Japan, and much detail in Tartary, Russia and China, including a note about Marco Polo .

Richly decorated with several vignettes, two decorative cartouches, sailing ships, and a flying fish. Vignettes depict the tents of the Tartar kings. The map is annotated in Latin and has text on verso. Includes curious handwritten coordinates on the sides.
Condition : With dark impression. Cracking to green areas, with two small pieces of paper loss. Reeinforced on verso with thin paper tissue. Some brown staining. Still a good example.
