Title : Troisiéme Partie - Afrique (from Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique, Statistique. . .).
Map maker : VANDERMAELEN, Ph..
Date : Brussels, 1825-1827.
Size : 21.7 x 27.6 inches. / 55.0 x 70.0 cm.
Colouring : Original colours.

Description :"thought to be the first world atlas on a uniform scale and the first to be produced by lithography" (Tooley).
The atlas has at the beginning an index map "Carte D'Assemblage de L'Afrique" and the map shows how the map of Africa is divided into 57 maps and two supplemental maps.
Maps of The Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Madagascar and the coastal areas of Africa are covered as well as most of North Africa. However, the interior of large parts of sub-Saharan Africa are not mapped and are labelled "Pays inconnu aux Europeens [country unknown to Europeans]."

Supported by the fortune of his parents and assisted by his brother, Jean-Francois, Vandermaelen built a spacious geographical Institute in 1829, in which he installed a map-drawing section, a library and a museum. He published one of the most remarkable world atlases ever made: a world atlas with ca.400 maps on a uniform scale of ca. 1:1,6 million.
This work, which appeared in 1827, was far ahead of its time but its appearance could only be justified by the unparalleled zeal of its author. As the atlas was published in instalments during the period 1825-1827.

The lithography was carried out by Henri Ode, who applied a new technique, especially designed for the Atlas Universel. A number of maps have been lithographed by Philippe Vandermaelen himself.

Condition : Volume 3 only. Elephant Folio. PLANO edition. Contemporary half calf. Title and 60 original hand coloured lithographed maps. The last pages are water stained in lower margin. Somewhat age toned throughout. For the rest a fine set with broad margins.
