Title : Tabula orientalis regionis, Asiae sciliset extremas complectens terras et regna..
Map maker : MÜNSTER, S..
Date : Basle, 1550.
Size : 10.2 x 13.8 inches. / 26.0 x 35.0 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :This is one of the earliest maps of the whole continent of Asia, based on the recent geographical discoveries by Portuguese navigators. The outline of the Asian mainland is relatively well established, but Münster omits the extreme northeast of Asia, still believed to be joined to the Americas.
The Pacific Ocean shows an archipelago of 7448 islands according to the map, a forerunner to the better understanding of Southeast Asia, which is largely unrecognizeable, although Java Minor and Major, Porne (Borneo), Moluca and several other islands are named. The map does not include Japan, which appears on the map of America. The famed Spice Islands of the Moluccas are located, but oddly shaped. The Indian Ocean is filled with a huge sea monster and a fantastic two-tailed mermaid and nice pictorial cities and mountains.
This charming map was published in the 1550-edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia. This edition is considered to be Münster’s Magnum Opus. Münster was the first to introduce a separate map for each of the four then known continents. The 1550-maps of the other continents, Europe, Africa and America, are also offered in this auction. After many new discoveries and explorations, by 1588 a new edition of the Cosmographia had become necessary. All the maps were recut to bring them up to date and the 1588-maps of the continents, including the map of the Asia are also offered in this auction. ¤

Condition : Good impression with minor soil in margins. This example is printed on thicker, better quality paper than many examples of this map. There are the typical binding holes in the blank margins which have been restored professionally.
