Description :This hand-coloured, copper engraving is one of the most interesting decorative works of cartography. It shows The Netherlands and Belgium in the shape of a lion and is called "Leo Belgicus". It is the title page from "De Bello Belgico" written by Famianus Strada.
Famiano Strada (1572 - 1649) was a Jesuit priest , historian and moralist. He taught rhetoric and Latin at the Collegio Romano of the Jesuits in Rome. The most famous work of Famiano Strada's De Bello Belgico decades duae, 1555-1590 ( Dutch : War in the Low Countries written about 1602. It was published in 1632 and translated into Dutch in 1646 . The book describes the sights and sounds of the battle between the Spanish troops of the Duke of Parma and the troops of the States-General of William of Orange.

Condition : In good condition with usual age toning. There was a tear at the binding trim that was professionally repaired and the print was remargined on the left, bottom and half the right side.
