Title : Moscovia. Questa Citta la principale de la provincia di Russia. . ..
Map maker : FLORIMI, M..
Date : Siena, 1590.
Size : 14.1 x 19.6 inches. / 35.7 x 49.8 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Very rare Lafreri school-type plan of Moscow from a slightly elevated viewpoint across the frozen Moskva River. The print is based on a view by the Austrian Sebastian Herberstein from c. 1547 who visited Russia and Moscow several times in royal service. In the heart of the city is the Kremlin, labeled Arx, which was constructed between the years 1485 1530.
The walled center of the city is depicted with its many churches and filled with people and horse-drawn sleighs, others of which are shown, along with skiers, on the river to the right. In the foreground are depicted two cows and a number of armed Russian soldiers on horseback. These graphically reflected the growing military power of Moscow under Grand Duke Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible), who was the first to assume the title of Tsar of Russia and who established the city as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Russia in 1547, not long before this image was made.
Panel in lower right corner with a description of Moscow: "Questa Citta la principale de la provincia di Russia". Also including a coat of arm in the upper left corner.
Very rare.
Condition : Paper slightly age-toned. A few minor worm holes along the center fold. Verso of center fold re-inforced for protective reason. Dark impression.
