Title : [East coast of Africa].
Map maker : CAMOCIO, G.F. / FORLANI, P..
Date : Venice, G.H. Camocio, ca.1563.
Size : 17.0 x 13.4 inches. / 43.3 x 34.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Very rare map of the eastern part of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the western part of India. In the Indian Ocean Madagascar, Noah's Ark with a dove returning with its olive branch, two ships, three sea monsters and a decorative compass rose. The map reveals Portuguese trading forts along the coast of Africa extending beyond Madagascar and Arabia..
A second sheet exists of the west coast of Africa the two can be assembled to a two sheet map of the continent.

The map was engraved by Forlani and is a close copy of Paulo Forlani's 1562 map of Africa, however this sheet is extended to show the Malabar Coast of the Indian peninsula reflecting the region's importance.
The compass rose in the Indian Ocean has North indicated with a “T” for “Tramontana”. Only by the 1570’s, Settentrionale – the word for “North” replacing Tramontana.
Near the headwaters of the Blue Nile appears a structure apparently modeled on the Doge’s Palace in Venice. with a note indicating this was the location where the progeny of the fabled Prester John were kept imprisoned. The map includes Biblical information with mounts Sinai and Horeb shown.
Richard Betz describes 4 states as the differences are only markable in the title on the left sheet it is difficult to date this map. This is a very dark impression with the plate tone clearly present pointing to a very early imprint..

An unique opportunity to acquire a fine example from an town view from the early Lafreri school.!
Betz, Africa, map 8.
Condition : Short margins. A few worm holes in the center fold and lower right filled in. Very good and dark impression.
