Date : London, 1626.
Size : 15.4 x 20.5 inches. / 39.0 x 52.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured

Description :First state, with 1626 in title and imprint "To be sold in pops-head alle by Geor Humble." A landmark map, the first atlas map to depict California as an island. The legends and some of the ornamentation were adapted from William Grentís 1625 world map, including the astronomical drawings of eclipses and diagrams of heavenly spheres.
The four allegorical figures of the elements (fire, earth, air and water), and the two celestial hemispheres were taken from Hondius' world map of 1617. There are four medallion portraits of Drake, Magellan, Cavendish and VanderNoort. From "A Prospect of the most Famous parts of the World".
Shirley, The Mapping of the World, 317; Shirley, Maps in the Atlases of the British Library, T.SPE-2f.
Condition : Moderately age toned with spotting, rubbing, light impression in places, marginal tears. Closed tear with no loss extends from lower left underneath portrait of Magellan into Pacific ocean.
Professionally conserved and repaired, backing removed and weak areas strengthened with Japanese tissue, with some minor loss of text on verso.
