Description
Compiled by Kageyasu Takahashi, the finest world map of the Edo period, copper plate print, 1810. Bunka 7 is dated from the preface on this map,
This world map, published under the title Shintei Bankoku Zenzu [Revised Comprehensive Map of All Countries], was prepared at the request of the Government by the Court Astronomer Kageyasu Takahashi (1785-1829) and by Shigeromi Hazama (1756-1816) his dated Bunkwa 7 th Year (1810).
It was engraved in copper and hand colored by Aodo.
Due to its immense size, the map permits a level of detail seldom seen on world maps (labeling many cities, explorer routes, etc.), with even relatively small countries portrayed clearly.

As Takahashi states in the accompanying text to his written in Chinese, he was given the order to prepare an improved universal map at the end of 1807. His map shows the eastern and the western hemispheres.
The corners of the huge sheet accommodate, moreover, four small maps (each with a diameter of 16.5 cm): a hemisphere with Japan in the center, the North Pole hemisphere, the hemisphere of the South Atlantic, and the South Pole hemisphere.
The map was based on Arrowsmith's map. This map depicts the "Parime Lacus" similar to d'Anville 1760. The geographical name "Parime
Lacus" is shown on the map in Japanese Katakana characters.
Takahashi’s map served as a model for numerous later maps down to modern times.

The map was republished in 1855 by Kaiko Yamaji under the title of "Jutei Bankoku Zenzu" and again in 1871 by the Daigaku Nanko, later the Tokyo University.

The author of this map is the same 'Takahashi who was principally concerned in the case which, in the winter of 1828, led to the expulsion from Japan of Baron Philipp Franz von Siebold. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (1796 – 1866).
In the mid-Edo period Dutch studies took hold in Japan, bringing with them new geographical knowledge and the latest world maps incorporating this knowledge, and the Japanese soon began producing maps based on Dutch sources.
Shiba Kokan's Map of the Earth (1792) was the first of these to be published: here the fictional continent of Magellanica was reduced in area,
whilst countries such as New Guinea and Australia were included for the first time.
By the time this  Shintei Bankoku Zenzu (Newly Revised World Map) of 1810, Magellanica had completely disappeared. This map was produced by the government's chief astronomer and cartographer (tenmongata) Takahashi Kageyasu, was one of the first to include Mamiya Rinzo's recent discoveries in the far north of Japan and is an epoch-making achievement of international significance.

It also shows some uniquely Japanese characteristics, such as the left-right reversal of the conventional positions of the eastern and western hemispheres to place Japan at the center of the world map.

A colossal composition that has the distinction of being the FIRST ever official Japanese map of the world.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
