Description
A wonderful 'bird's eye' view of the 'Eternal City' of Rome by Homann, although published in the first quarter of the eighteen century, the map portrays the city at the end of the previous century. Shows the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Piazza del Popolo, the Church of San Giovanni Laterno, the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican, which is dominated by the Dome of St. Peter's Basilica and Gianlorenzo Bernini's great oval Colonnade that lines the square below.

The map shows the city in minute detail; highlighting houses, gardens, buildings, bridges, streets, piazzas, monuments, and churches with the utmost precision.
The title runs along the upper border, while underneath you see a pair of dazzling cartouches. The left side cartouche comprises an ecclesiastical figure, a cherub and a female holding the scales of justice. The right side cartouche features the coat of arms of Pope Clemente XI (1700-1721).

Running the length of the left-hand side of the map are the districts (I-XIV) of Rome. It lists the most distinguished churches, palaces and squares within each district. Running down the right side of the map is a box explaining the history of Rome since its inception.
There are two smaller insets along the lower map border; one shows the scale of miles - the other names the seven hills of Rome.

A large inset shows the shields/crests of the 14 districts that make up the city of Rome.

Certificate of authenticityWe provide professional descriptions, condition report and HiBCoR rating (based on 45 years experience in the map business)
We fully guarantee the authenticity of items we sell. We provide a certificate of authenticity for each purchased item.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.

We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
