Description
Published in Harper’s Weekly on December 17, 1870, this is a striking map of France and the events of the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71). With great detail, this map was a result of on-the-ground reporting, as close as one could get in 1870.
The title banner at the top depicts a group of cavalry mid-battle. It is a dynamic depiction of war, showing the intensity of battle through movement, through dust flying and horses collapsing mid-stride.
A detailed map of France takes up the majority of the page, showing national borders, including Alsace, a territory then disputed between France and Germany. The Pyrenees and Alps, among other mountain ranges, are featured, along with many rivers. The roads connecting major cities are also shown.
To the left of the map of France are facts regarding the country’s area and population, army, and navy at the time of publication. Below the map is a chronological list of the “Principal Events of the War.” It includes detailed reports of casualties and weapons, such as “Nov. 11. Capitulation of Neuf Breisach, with 5000 men and 100 guns.”
