A unique and rare opportunity to acquire the original watercolour used to illustrate the Midsummer Holiday issue of the 1906 The Century Magazine, and the finished magazine front cover. Volume 72, No.4
The watercolour shows an attractive, ethereal young female figure standing on rocks with the waves and surf crashing all around her, a ribbon, secured at her waist, and her long aubin hair are flying freely in the wind. Seagulls hover and cry around her head.
The Century Magazine was first published in the United States in 1881 by The Century Company of New York City, which had been bought in that year by Roswell Smith and renamed by him after the Century Association. It was the successor of Scribner's Monthly Magazine and ceased publication in 1930.
While remaining extremely influential and well-regarded among the American elite, the popularity of The Century began to decline in the 1890's and would never regain the prominence it had as the leading American periodical of the late nineteenth century. By 1900, it had about 125,000 subscribers, half of the circulation it had in the 1880s. The Century suffered due to competition from other cheaper magazines, many of which Gilder (editor) and his staff considered vulgar.
