Full title: 'Typus Religionis. Estampe, du tableau trouvé dans l'eglise, des ci-devant soi-disants- Jésuites de Billom en Auvergne. 2' an. 1763'. Etching by Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1814).

A very interesting etching on laid paper reproducing the famous “Typus religionis”, painted on wood and dated from 16th Century and found in the Jesuit college in Billom (Auvergne / France).
Allegorical representation of the Catholic Church shown as a galleon 'the Nave of the Faith' governed by the religious factions, especially the Jesuits, attempting to gain command and directing both church and state, here used to discredit them and to justify their expulsion from the realm of France.
Etched from an allegorical painting of the French Wars of Religion, which had been discovered in the Jesuit College at Billom in Auvergne, the first Jesuit college established in France.

This engraving is quite rare, most copies are in museums, with only a few examples in private hands.
Reference: Bocher, 1882 227; Muller 1863-1882 448 Aa; Henin 1877-84 9141.
