Description
Engraving of Hans Worrenberg, a dwarf from Switzerland, at age 36 in 1687.
Hans Worrenberg was a 17th-century Swiss dwarf who became a touring show performer, known mainly from prints, broadsides, and later catalogs.
His name appears in several forms: Hans Worrenberg, Hans Worrenbergh, Johann/John Worrenburg, John Woremberg, and John Wormbergh. A German museum record describes him as “the very small man from Switzerland,” seen in Hamburg in May–June 1687, 2 feet 7 inches tall and 36 years old, and lists him as active as a showman in Hamburg in 1687 and London in 1688.
In London, he was advertised as a rare public attraction. A Wellcome Collection etching from 1688 identifies him as “John Woremberg a Switzar”, 2 feet 7 inches tall, 38 years old, “to be seen now in London.” A later historical account says handbills promoted him as having been seen by the king and nobility at Whitehall, that he sang, spoke High Dutch, and could be visited at the Plume of Feathers in the Stock Market or privately by appointment.
The surviving records also say he died in 1695 in Rotterdam. The common story is that he was being carried in a wooden box across a plank from a quay to a ship; the plank broke, he fell into the water while enclosed in the box, and drowned.

Condition / Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century, then "colored", or "attractive colors" will be used.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
