A rare chart from the area around Beaufort in the North to Dawfoskey Island and Trench's Island, centered on Arry's Island and Hilton Head. The map highlights the terrain and harbour of Port Royal, near the present-day border between South Carolina and Georgia. Taken from the "Atlantic Neptune", and marked in lower left corner "Published according to Act of Parliament August 10th, 1777 by J.F.W. Des Barres Esq".
Relief shown by shading and hachures. Depths shown by soundings.

This superb sea chart constructed for the use of the British Navy.

The Atlantic Neptune is universally recognised as one of the most magnificent atlases ever made.
Examples were frequently carried on board the British war ships operating in American waters during the Revolution.

The Atlantic Neptune is the most celebrated sea atlas and contains the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America.
Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years' War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was charged with this Herculean task, publishing the first volume in London in 1775, which was soon followed by three further volumes.

Des Barres' monumental endeavour eventually featured over 200 charts and views, many being found in several states.
His charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, and in many cases remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades. (Snyder, city of Independence, p.271.
