Original edition, containing 49 colour lithographed planimetric maps, including 48 departmental maps on 44 plates and a large folding map of France.

This historical atlas of French aerial telegraph lines - from the setting up of the first Chappe telegraph line (Paris-Lille in 1793) to the abandonment of the last, in favour of the electric telegraph - was published by order of the Director General Postes and Telegraphs and established by Adhémar Kermabon under the direction of Ernest Jacquez.

The Chappe telegraph was the former manor of visual telecommunications used in the English Channel between 1799 and 1852 when it was replaced by the electric telegraph.

It was developed by Claude Chappe (1763-1805) in 1791. It allows the transmission of coded messages through towers or steeples from ten to fifteen kilometers distance. Each station is topped by a mast with two articulated arms operated by two employees known as “stationary”. Messages are read using a telescop.

The Paris-Brest, Avranches-Nantes and Cherbourg-Avranches lines crossed the English Channel from east to west and from north to south and made Avranches a telegraph centre.
Only the telegraph director knew the secret code for transmitting/receiving the messages; he was the intermediary between the ministers and the higher authorities of the city. It took, when the weather is good, 3 minutes and 56 seconds for a signal from Cherbourg to arrive in Paris.
