Early Ptolemaic woodcut map of the regions of Africa that were known to the ancients. The twin lake sources of the Nile are located near the Mons Lune (Mountains of the Moon). The Niger River is prominently featured in Libya with its source in several interior lakes and mountains ranges.

The legendary Christian king, Prester John, is pictured in Ethiopia. Published in Lyon by Melchior and Gaspar Treschsel.

"The elaborate Renaissance woodcut panels on the reverse may have been designed by Albrecht Dürer" according to Rodney Shirley.

Known as the first Servetus edition, this Lyons edition was so named due to the fate of its editor. Michael Servetus(c.1511-53) was a Spanish physician and theologian. His unorthodox teachings led to his condemnation as a heretic by Protestants and Roman Catholics. In Geneva, 1553, he was burned at the stake by order of John Calvin who insisted copies of this edition be burned with him.
