Fine bird's-eye plan of the city Messina.
A decorative cartouche encloses a detailed key to the map that locates the castle, bastillon, armaments and government buildings.

Taken from Nicholas Tindal's "Continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England". Many maps in this work show military campaigns fought by the British during the Wars of the Spanish Succession, fought in Spain or in the Low Countries, and was also supplemented by a series of contemporary maps of the countries of the British Isles and parts of the wider world.

Paul de Rapin (25 March 1661 25 April 1725), sieur of Thoyras (and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), was a French historian writing under English patronage.
The plan was engraved by Isaac Basire (17301802), also known as James Basire Sr. His father was Isaac Basire (17041768), a cartographer, his son (17691822) and grandson (17961869) were also named James these four generations of Basires were all engravers.
