A fine 1815 Thomson map of the European part of Russia, engraved in the minimalist English style pioneered in the early part of the 19th century. Coincidentally, it was published at the same time Tsarist Russia emerged from the Napoleonic Wars.
Thomson's maps are known for their pleasing colour, large size, and high detail. Prepared by John Thomson for inclusion in the 1817 edition of Thomson's “New General Atlas”.

John Thomson (1777-1837) was a Scottish cartographer, publisher and bookbinder active in Edinburgh during the early part of the 19th century. He is generally considered one of the leading masters of the Edinburgh school of cartography, which flourished from roughly 1800 to 1830.
Thomson and his contemporaries (Pinkerton and Cary) redefined European cartography by abandoning typical 18th century decorative elements such as elaborate title cartouches in favour of greater detail and accuracy.
