Between the years of 1609 and 1780, the Jesuits (the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus) established in South America, an autonomous Christian state, on the lands of present day Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. This delightful map is well engraved and decorated with a compass rose, some explanatory text in Latin, a scrolled title cartouche, a cartouche dedicated to Michelangelo Tamburino, the Superior General of the Soc. Of Jesus from 1706-1730. The map depicts mountains, rivers, forests, Jesuit Colleges, settlements, villages and missions. A striking and attractive map by the German cartographer Mattheus Seutter.

Seutter the elder (1678-1757) was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann in the last years of the seventeenth century in Nuremberg, however, after his apprenticeship, Seutter left to settle in Augsburg in order to establish his own publishing business. This included the "Atlas Geographicus" (1725) and the "Grosser Atlas" (1735). As you might expect, Seutter's style was heavily influenced by that of Homann. Seutter Senior was joined in the business by his son, Albrecht (1722-1762), who continued the business in partnership with Tobias Lotter (1717-1777), upon the death of his father.
