Striking, double-hemisphere world map depicting the discoveries in the Pacific and northern oceans during the latter 18th century.
Alaska is shown with a fairly correct shape. The Sandwich Islands are shown and noted as the place where Captain Cook was killed. The South Pacific is filled with islands and New Zealand is fully formed.
Tasmania is still attached to Australia (New Holland), which is shown with an unexplored southern coastline.

There are numerous notations throughout and the tracks of Cook's voyages with the dates of his major discoveries.

The map is of interest for the use of Sea of Corea, the sea between Korea and Japan.
It is decoratively engraved with celestial and terrestrial globes at top corners and an orrery and compass in bottom corners.
An inset of the North Pole is tucked between the hemispheres at bottom with the title cartouche balancing the composition at top. Decorative garlands then surround the map, making for a lovely presentation. By Thomas Bowen, published in “Bankes's New System of Geography” in 1790.

Thomas Bowen (1728-1790), was an English engraver of charts. He was the son of Emanuel Bowen (1693-1767), map engraver to King George II and to King Louis XV. He died in Clerkenwell workhouse early in 1790, the year that this map was published.
