Homann's map is based upon the works of George von Mengden (1628-1702) a Livonian cartographer who worked for Peter the Great and Count Jacob Bruce [Graf Jakov Villimovic Brjus] (1670-1737), a Russian Field Marshal of Scots descent who produced with Mengden the first map of South Russia (1699) printed in Russian. The map was constantly updated to depict the political changes.
With fully originally hand coloured decorative cartouche. The map extends to include Constantinople in the south and north to Moscow and Smolensko. The large decorative title cartouche is surrounded in clouds with several putti holding the coat of arms of Russia with the two-headed imperial eagle and the image of a cat in a mirror.
Giving good detail along the river Dnieper. In lower left Istanbul.

This is an early state. The currants of the Danube in the Black Sea are very good visible.

A border line running along a imaginary river "Lecop Syl et Cuban fl" running from Taman island.

The map is in a strictly contemporary colouring and of the highest level. More about "colouring of antique maps [+]
