Guillaume de L'Isle became one of the foremost geographers of his age. He was tutored by Jean-Dominique Cassini and at the age of 25 produced a globe, maps of the four continents, and this his first world map. He was one of the first, in his world map, to correct the extended length of the Mediterranean and to give back to California its true peninsular formation. However, unlike Jaillot, he appears to link New Guinea to Australia.
The title to this world map is framed within an elegant cartouche at the top, balanced on either side by a flowing banner. There are four geographical circles in the corners: along the bottom there is an expanse of sea dotted with ships on either side of the cartouche.
On the map are marked the tracks of the principal circumnavigators.
Reference: Shirley, World 603.
