Description
Rare second edition of a lithographed wall map of the European part of the Russian empire, at a scale of about 1:3,200,000. With the title in a elaborately decorated lettering above left, an inset plan of St. Petersburg ("Grundriss von St. Petersburg gezeichnet von A. Roetsch 1835"), a key to the numbers 1-53 (main buildings) and a-c (main squares), a key to the symbols and colors, and two scales. Lithographed by H. Klöpfel.
The first edition appeared in 1835, and a third in 1844. It shows the roads and waterways in great detail, the smallest towns or villages shown have a population of less than 5000, and mountains are also indicated. Weiland was a very active cartographer for the Geographical Institute in Weimar, a leading German map firm that set quality standards through much of the nineteenth century.
Colored in outline as published to indicate the six regions noted in the key.
The coloring used for the border has browned it, and also offset to make two slightly browned patches in the map image. Otherwise a very good copy. An interesting and unusual map of the western part of the Russian empire.

Condition and Coloring
We indicate the condition of each item and use our unnique HiBCoR grading system in which four key items determine a map's value: Historical Importance, Beauty, Condition/Coloring and Rarity.
Color Key
We offer many maps in their original black and white condition. We do not systematically color-up maps to make them more sellable to the general public or buyer.
Copper engraved or wood block maps are always hand colored. Maps were initially colored for aesthetic reasons and to improve readability. Nowadays, it is becoming a challenge to find maps in their original colors and are therefor more valuable.
We use the following color keys in our catalog:
Original colors; mean that the colors have been applied around the time the map was issued.
Original o/l colors; means the map has only the borders colored at the time of publication.
Colored; If the colors are applied recently or at the end of the 20th century.
