Description :Two engravings. [430] In the Orinoco delta, during the rainy season, no one could live at ground level because the river rose about 30 feet. During this time the Indians lived in their houses, built on high rocks or in trees and they lived on a diet of fish, birds and palm hearts.
When their chiefs died they performed a strange ceremony. First they buried the corpse until all the flesh had decomposed then they would dig up the skeleton and adorn it with feathers and gold plates, before hanging it up for decoration in their houses.

The second engraving shows Ralegh's men in boats up the Orinoco river, encountering all manner of assorted sea monsters, and seeing all manner of animals on land.

In 1631 Johann Ludwig Gottfried, inherited the Theodor De Bry’s publishing firm, among the illustrated accounts of the expeditions of Magellan, Columbus, Vespucci, Cortes, Balboa, Raleigh, Drake, Smith, and many others.
Gottfried issued together with Matthaeus Merian a one-volume condensation "Newe Welt Vnd Americanische Historien/ Jnhaltende Warhafftige vnd volkommene Beschreibungen Aller West-Jndianischen Landschafften..." that used many of the original copper plates and supplemented them with new ones of more recent voyages. The book was published by Matthaeus Merian. The work was reprinted in 1655 / 1657.
